The English electronic band, Depeche Mode were part of the British New Wave scene back in the 80s and consisted of Dave Gahan on lead vocals and co-songwriting, Martin Gore on keyboards, guitar, co-lead vocals and primary songwriting, Andy Fletcher and Vince Clarke were part of the original band when they released their debut album, Speak & Spell in 1981. Clarke left the band shortly after they released the debut album, and the three remaining members recorded A Broken Frame. With Martin Gore as the lead songwriter, Alan Wilder replaced Clarke, and this line-up remained for thirteen years.
Depeche Mode has been a top-rated band throughout their career, especially in the UK, with 54 songs on the UK Singles Chart and 17 Top 10 albums in the UK chart. To date, the band has sold over 100 million records worldwide. In December 2016, Depeche Mode was named 10th Greatest of All Time Top Dance Club Artists, and VH1 ranked them at number 98 on the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time list. Q magazine also included Depeche Mode in their list of the 50 Bands That Changed the World.
The band became established as a dominant force in electronic and alternative music in the 80s, with their two albums, Black Celebration and Music for the Masses. Their concert, the Pasadena Rose Bowl, was held in June of 1988 and drew more than 60,000 people, making it a highlight of the times. Their album Violator, released in 1990, reached mainstream international team success, and their following album, Songs of Faith and Devotion, was also a major success in 1993. Behind the scenes, the band was struggling with internal issues, and because of this, Wilder left the band in 1995. Fletcher passed away in 2022, and now Gore and Gahan continue in Depeche Mode.
